From Out Of Nowhere Tour

Jeff Lynne's ELO -- From Out Of Nowhere Tour

An in-depth look at the 2020 tour

Comments and Observations

This tour was first announced on January 24, 2020. It was only a tour of Europe from September 19 to October 21, 2020 and hitting 14 cities. Sadly, on May 15, 2020 on Jeff Lynne's official Facebook page, it was announced that the tour was cancelled. More dates in the North America were probably planned as well for late 2020 or early 2021, but the tour was cancelled before they could even be announced.

Tour cancellation announcementThe cause of the cancellation was reported to be due to the "ongoing coronavirus pandemic". Although the start of the tour was about four months away, it was likely decided that the closing of venues may still occur at that time and it was a waste to hire crew and staff, as well as design and produce tour specific products when chances were good they would not be needed. There was a double sided tour t-shirt and a tour poster produced and sold on the Jeff Lynne's ELO UK shop at about the time the tour was announced, so these are products for a tour that would never happen.

BBC In ConcertIt was announced that Dhani Harrison was expected to open all shows on the tour, much as he had done for the Live 2019 tour shows. And, of course, this gives a good indication that he would likely have come on stage to sing the Traveling Wilburys' Handle With Care with the band again as he did for the Live 2019 shows.

Although the actual tour didn't happen, there was a promotional appearance on the BBC's In Concert program, broadcast on both BBC Radio and TV, on November 7, 2019 and recorded at BBC Radio Theatre. This concert was a shortened version of the expected concert and including three songs from the new From Out Of Nowhere album, including From Out Of Nowhere, All My Love and Time Of Our Life. This is the only surviving performance of what might have been for the cancelled 2020 tour.

Setlist

As the tour was cancelled, there is no real setlist. However, one could probably glean an idea of the setlist based upon the late 2019 In Concert BBC performance. For this show, three new From Out Of Nowhere songs were performed. For the remaining songs, although in a slightly different order compared to the previous years of Jeff Lynne's ELO shows, all arrangements matched those versions. Surely Roll Over Beethoven would have once again closed the show as an encore, but this was not performed for the shortened In Concert show.

Song Title Arrangement Song comments
Evil Woman This is the same as the Face The Music album arrangement, but without the orchestral intro and a non-fading ending.
All Over The World This is the same as the Xanadu album arrangement.
Do Ya This is the same as the A New World Record album arrangement.
Handle With Care This is the same as the Volume One album arrangement with a non-fading ending. Jeff sings the George Harrison lead vocal parts and Iain Hornal sings the Roy Orbison lead vocal parts. Also, the string players play as well, which was not on the original song at all.
Livin' Thing This is the same as the A New World Record album arrangement, but with a non-fading ending.
From Out Of Nowhere This is the same as the From Out Of Nowhere album arrangement, but with a non-fading ending.
Don't Bring Me Down This is the same as the Discovery album arrangement, but with a slightly bigger drum ending.
All My Love This is the same as the From Out Of Nowhere album arrangement, but with a non-fading ending.
Eldorado Overture/Can't Get It Out Of My Head This is the same as the Eldorado album arrangement, but the Eldorado Overture is slightly shortened and Can't Get It Out Of My Head has a non-fading end.
Time Of Our Life This is the same as the From Out Of Nowhere album arrangement.
Rockaria! This is the same as the A New World Record album arrangement, but Jeff and backing vocalist Iain Hornal take turns on each verse and they sing alternate lines on the closing lines (starting with "Well we were reelin' and a rockin' all through the night"). Backing vocalist Melanie Lewis-McDonald supplies the opera singer bits.
Turn To Stone This is the same as the Out Of The Blue album arrangement, but with a non-fading ending.
Mr. Blue Sky This is the same as the Out Of The Blue album arrangement, complete with the "Concerto For A Rainy Day" coda, and a big drum finish.
