Home Videos from 1988 to 1990

An in-depth look at the various home videos

Comments and Observations

The period from 1987 to about 1991 was an incredibly productive time from Jeff Lynne. It was during this time the several home videos were recorded by various poeple, including Tom Petty, George Harrison, Mike Campbell and probably other unidentified individuals. These videos were of a personal nature, catching several incredibly rare and unique moments in the creative process, including mostly moments during the recording of the Traveling Wilburys albums, Roy Orbison's Mystery Girl, Del Shannon's Walk Away, Tom Petty's Full Moon Fever and more. In addition, there is a lot of home recordings (some of it may be professionally done) for the mid-1990s Beatles sessions and Paul McCartney's Flaming Pie sessions.

These are sometimes referred to as the "garage recordings." This is a slight misnomer, but the name is often used to identify all known home video recordings from the period. The term arises because many of the recordings were taken from the recording of the Full Moon Fever (and other) songs that were recorded in Mike Campbell's garage during the late 1980s. However, the home videos cover several different locations and recordings, including various artist's homes and recording studios.

Although these are personal recordings, some of the material has been released over the years on various documentaries and TV specials, but only a small subset of the material has ever been offically released. Some of the footage certainly contains some rather private material, including children and spouses (and a very young Dhani Harrison), personal home locations and more. So only some of it has ever appeared officially. The first known appearance of this footage was on the Tom Petty: Going Home documentary in 1993, however, over the years more bits and pieces have appeared.

There was extensive footage filmed during the recording of the Traveling Wilburys' second album, Vol. 3, but only a tiny bit has been used in the The True History Of The Traveling Wilburys documentary. A full 36-minute recording showing several private moments has been bootlegged. It shows much of the band relaxing and chatting, but highlights include Jim Keltner's drum microphone testing, listening to selected tracks from Jeff's Armchair Theatre album, listening to working versions of Like A Ship and 7 Deadly Sins, bits of the album photoshoot, and the band reviewing images from the photoshoot.

Much of the material features song performances while in development. Thus, the songs are early working versions or individual instruments or vocals that will differ from the final versions. Sadly, because of the way this footage is used in documentaries, the original audio of the video is replaced with artists voiceovers (obscuring the musical audio) or replaced with the studio recording altogether. Efforts have been made below to identify where and when these rare musical performances can actually be heard.

A detailed analysis of the 2012 Mr. Blue Sky: The Story Of Jeff Lynne And ELO documentary, including all the home video bits used, can be found HERE. This documentary also features footage in Jeff Lynne's home, produced in the 2000s, but that is professional film, not home video, so it is not included here.

The footage was all filmed on home video cameras in the late 1980s to mid 1990s. At the time, all home cameras filmed with a 4:3 aspect ratio, which was standard for television broadcasts at the time. However with the move of televisions to the 16:9 aspect ratio by the early 2000s, this presented a problem for documentary makers that wanted to use this 4:3 ratio footage in the 16:9 ratio format. The solution has been to add black bars to the sides of the 16:9 images, thus preserving the original footage; or to crop the top and/or bottom of the footage, to fit the 16:9 ratio, thus losing information. Sadly, two of the greatest sources for this rare footage, the 2012 Mr. Blue Sky: The Story Of Jeff Lynne And ELO and the 2007 The True History Of The Traveling Wilburys documentaries, chose to crop the images.

Recording Roy Orbison's You Got It
Description: There are brief recordings of You Got It featuring Roy, Jeff, George and Tom. Particularly, there are several sections of the group recording guitars, backing vocals or lead vocals around the microphone, as well as some bits of Jeff, alone, recording the piano.

Images In Dreams
Mr. Blue Sky: The Story Of Jeff Lynne And ELO
Jeff on in studio Per the bits of the group and Roy recording You Got It: Tom Petty: Going Home and Runnin' Down A Dream have nearly exactly the same footage. This includes a sequence of Roy, Jeff, Tom and an unidentified person sitting in a semicircle playing guitars all with a Tom Petty voiceover of meeting Roy and writing You Got It. This segues to footage of Roy, Jeff, Tom and two unidentified persons providing some handclaps to the song around the microphone, followed by Jeff, Roy and Tom only singing backing vocals (two different bits connected), then ending with Roy on the microphone alone singing lead (and obviously not final!) vocals. Although these two documentaries have the exact same footage (and Tom's voiceover), there are very small differences. The Runnin' Down A Dream documentary features a short bit of Tom and Jeff walking to a room before hand (possibly from the Traveling Wilburys Volume One home video material) that cuts off some of the home video footage while You Got It and Tom's voiceover play; and the Tom Petty: Going Home documentary features a much longer bit of Roy at the microphone at the end that is cut short in the Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers: Runnin' Down A Dream documentary.

In Dreams feature a very short bit of George, Roy, Jeff, and Tom sitting around in a semicircle playing guitars, with voiceover by Jeff and not the home video audio.

Rare Music: A mix of the recording of Jeff, Tom and Roy strumming guitars; handclaps and cymbals; backing vocals; and an alternate of Roy's lead vocals on the chorus.listen
Jeff on piano Per the bits of Jeff playing the piano for You Got It: In Dreams compared to Mr. Blue Sky: The Story Of Jeff Lynne And ELO, the latter features a much earlier start of the footage of Jeff playing the piano for You Got It. On the descending riff part of the song, both In Dreams and Mr. Blue Sky: The Story Of Jeff Lynne And ELO have the same footage, but Mr. Blue Sky: The Story Of Jeff Lynne And ELO cuts out after the descending riff while In Dreams continues and includes Jeff mugging for the camera while he plays. Thus, combining footage from both documentaries, a more complete segment is available.
Rare Music: Jeff plays piano over the recording of You Got It, with the piano higher the mix.listen

Recording Del Shannon's Rock On!
Description: Del is in the studio recording Walk Away with Jeff, Tom Petty, Benmont Tench and Howie Epstein including lead vocals, backing vocals and thigh slaps. Mr. Blue Sky: The Story Of Jeff Lynne And ELO
Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty and Del Shannon recording Walk Away There exists among fan circles, some home video footage of the recording of tracks for Rock On!. This footage, from a completely unknown source, does appear to be professionally prepared as it contains segments that are transitioned from scene to scene and some including titles. The footage is: (1) simple acoustic guitars for Walk Away while showing footage of each person featured (Del, Jeff, Tom Petty, Benmont Tench, and Howie Epstein); Jeff, Tom and Tom discussing backing vocals and joking about handclaps and a bongo, which, after discussion, evolves into thigh slaps; (3) playing of the final track while the trio record their their thigh slaps and ends with Jeff joking around and doing ass slaps instead; (4) footage and recording of keyboard parts by Benmont Tench for I Go To Pieces; (5) playing of the final I Go To Pieces tracks while various shots are shown on the drummer drumming, Del talking to a child in the studio, Benmont at the piano; (6) Jeff, Tom and Del standing around the microphone having a discussion about plectrums; (7) Del at the piano playing guitar and singing When I Had You [the first half is the live performance and second half is the final studio track dubbed over]; (8) the recording of backing vocals for What Kind Of Fool by Howie and Del with intercuts of a child, a drummer, and recording of acoustic guitars intercut; (9) Del recording lead vocals for Callin' Out My Name which fades into the studio recording and several intercut images of Del, Tom and Jeff around the studio; (10) Del recording lead vocals for I Got You (The Bird's Song) from various angles intercut with Jeff and Tom recording acouistic guitars and a shot of the three of them around the microphone [but not singing], and ending with Jeff and Del at the microphone recording backing vocals.

The 2012 Mr. Blue Sky: The Story Of Jeff Lynne And ELO documentary contains only a small portion of this, showing Jeff joking about handclaps and bongos for the recording of Walk Away only.

Rare Music: This is a playback of an early mix of I Go To Pieces with Benmont Tench recording his keyboard parts, before the song blends into a playback of the final mix.listen
Rare Music: This is a raw recording, guitar and vocals only, of When I Had You, which blends into playback of the final mix.listen
Rare Music: This sounds very close to the final version, but perhaps an early mix. The backing vocals sometimes sound very strong in the mix, so it could be from a session recording the backing vocals to over the mix.listen

Jeff and Tom recording acoustic guitars There is a short segment of Tom trying out some vocal excercises and Jeff walking in and saying he can try that out on whatever they are recording. The tail end of the segment has a voiceover by Tom. Also there is a short bit of Jeff and Tom playing acoustic guitars together, but there is a voiceover of Tom so it is impossible to know what they are playing. Finally, a very short bit of Jeff, Tom and two unknown people in the garage, watching an individual set up equipment.

Recording of Last Night
Description: In various rooms writing and recording the song.
Images The True History Of The Traveling Wilburys
The Traveling Wilburys recording Last Night Then, after a label of "Day 1" is shown, the band is seen strumming the chords for Last Night while voiceovers of George and Roy are heard; this footage seems to be mix of various bits of variable band members strumming guitars or in the control room while voiceovers by Tom and George are feature, and it is likely that much of the footage seem is not of the band strumming Last Night. Then the band is seen working out the lyrics to Last Night (with suggestions such as "long and tall" or "short and fat"), then more guitar strumming (particularly by Jeff). Shortly after more interview segments, Tom is showing recording the lead vocals for Last Night (and flubbing the lyrics), then the full band is shown recording, while a voiceover by Tom.

The Roy Orbison: One Of The Lonely Ones documentary includes select shots from this, including Roy, Tom and Bob sitting in a row playing the guitars of the song, then a segment of the group sitting around working out the lyrics, and a very short segment of the group around the microphone preparing to record vocals. Throughout, there are voiceovers by Jeff talking about the project.

George Harrison: Living In The Material World
Traveling Wilburys recording Dirty World For Dirty World there is another quick shot of the house exterior, followed by various quick shots of the band around a room, working out Dirty World lyrics with voiceovers by George and Jeff about the song. Finally, they are all standing around a microphone getting ready to sing. They are then shown singing the song's ending lines, alternating lyrics and cracking up at Roy's "trembling wilbury." The band arrives another day, sitting around the porch and talking, with Roy recalling the constant "Trembling Wilbury" goof from the previous day.

On George Harrison: Living In The Material World, the uninterrupted (no voiceover) of the group around the microphone singing the ending lines is shown, however, it cuts just before Roy's "trembling Wilbury" line; it also shows an otherwise unseen bit of the group around the microphone talking about the lines and George questions an unused "clothes that stretch" line.

The Legends: Roy Orbison - The 'Big O' In Britain program features the group on the porch, laughing about trying to record the closing of Dirty World and the "trembling wilbury" line always coming back to Roy.

For the Roy Orbison: One Of The Lonely Ones documentary, a very short portion of the group in the kitchen performing Ghost Riders In The Sky is shown, but the audio played is a voiceover from Jeff.

The Top 2000: The Untold Stories program shows this kitchen scene briefly, but the music is indiscernible due to a voiceover by Jeff Lynne. [Further, there are more quick shots of Jeff and the others at a mixing console and around the microphone, but it is so brief and with voiceover by Jeff, it's nearly impossible to identify.]

The Mr. Bue Sky documentary shows this kitchen scene briefly, but the music is also indiscernible due to a voiceover by Tom. Further, this also shows a brief clip that was a different angle from over George's shoulder that is not seen elsewhere.

Roy, Jeff and Tom are seen sitting around playing and admiring guitars while Tom voices over about Roy's playing. Roy is then seen at the microphone recording a verse and chorus for Not Alone Any More. Footage is shown of Jeff walking into the studio and setting up the board while he provides voiceover of how he broke in to record a new set of chords for Not Alone Any More and the others sitting around as if admiring his work. (Note, this may be a rare bit of Jeff acting because if he snuck in to do the work, how was it able to filmed? Perhaps he reenacted the events for the camera). Then more of Roy at the microphone singing the song's end (while studio recording plays) and other's admiring what he did afterwards.

There is also a clip of George, Jeff, Tom and Roy around a hanging microphone examining and touching it, but it's unsure where this fits in the songs as no song audio is played.

For the Roy Orbison: One Of The Lonely Ones documentary, only a short bit of this is shown, including Roy at the microphone singing the chorus line, as well as Jeff, George and Roy standing outside working out lyrics (with Jeff having a pad and pencil in his hand). [Note: Does the latter really belong here?]

The Mr. Blue Sky: The Story Of Jeff Lynne And ELO documentary shows the bit with Roy at the microphone singing the chorus line (not the actual audio is heard, but a disc play of the album version). In addition, some scenes of Jeff and various people at the mixing desk are shown, as well as other brief shots of Roy in the recording booth waiting to record, all while Tom Petty provices a voiceover.

In it, Jeff is in his home and tells the story of first meeting George; this is followed by the uninterrupted private film footage with a bit of voiceover from Jeff about George's enthusiasm for ukuleles. The footage features Jeff and George mugging for the camera in an extreme closeup, then playing around on banjoleles.
