The Over And Out Tour

Jeff Lynne's ELO -- The Over And Out Tour

An in-depth look at the 2024 tour

Comments and Observations

As the world emerged from the COVID-19 malaise and uncertainty, big concert tours began again. Jeff Lynne's ELO's 2020 From Out Of Nowhere tour was scrapped. Inevitable plans for a 50th anniversary event, perhaps a tour, were not implemented (other than a very few 50th anniversary items sold on the official website). Jeff Lynne and his band finally appeared for the first time at the VetsAid 2023 concert on November 12, 2023, with a shortened setlist of only 10 songs. This was perhaps a precursor to a full tour and showing that band was still an active band. The following year, 2024, the full tour would finally be announced and the band returned to the stage after a five year absense.

The North American tour was announced on March 18, 2024 via Jeff Lynne's ELO website and Facebook as well as press releases to various outlets. The tour was touted as the final ELO tour, thus the name of "Over and Out" for the tour. The North American tickets went on sale for all venues on March 20.

The October 26 show in Inglewood (a suburb of Los Angeles) was set to be the final show, but an unexpected illness in the band caused the October 21 show in Phoenix to be postponed to October 29. Thus the Phoenix show is the band's final concert in North America.

Near the end if the North American tour, on October 20, it was announced that Jeff Lynne's ELO would perform the band's last ever live show, playing on July 13. 2025 as part of the BST Hyde Park series of shows. British Summer Time Hyde Park (better known as BST Hyde Park) are a week long set of concerts, all in Hyde Park. Other headline artists for the 2025 concerts include Olivia Rodrigo, Zach Bryan, Noah Kahan, Hugh Jackman (cancelled), Sabrina Carpenter, Neil Young, and Stevie Wonder. Jeff Lynne's ELO is the closing concert with top billing. Tickets went on sale on October 23, with tickets available in various formats, including general admission, "Gold Circle", "Hydeaway", "Diamond", "Terrace", "Garden" and more. Jeff Lynne stated in the announcement that he wanted to do this as the final show, stating: "My return to touring began at Hyde Park in 2014. It seems like the perfect place to do our final show." Jeff Lynne had relaunched the live ELO at Hyde Park in September 2014 as part of BBC's Festival in a Day. (Although he had actually done a show on November 12, 2013 with nearly the same band at the Children In Need ROCKS show, doing two songs only at that show.)

Just a few short weeks later, on October 29, two additional shows in Birmingham (July 5, 2025) and Manchester (July 9, 2025) were announced, then on October 31, two additional shows in Birmingham (July 6) and Manchester (July 10) were added. Tickets went on sale on October 30, 2024 (first set) and October 31, 2024 (second set). No additional dates were announced, making the final UK tour only five performances across three cities.

StageThe stage setup was all new compared to prior tours. The guitarists were stage front, but the rest of the band was on an approximate three foot raise tier behind them. The backdrop was a large ELO spaceship with the lighting rig coming out of the sides. The center of the spaceship featured various computerized graphics, with special designs for each song. On each side of the spaceship were screens showing closeup camera shots of the band as they played, each showing the same images.

The song selection was very similar to previous tours, however, from the recent albums, One More Time from From Out Of Nowhere was added and When I Was A Boy from Alone In The Universe was dropped. Steppin' Out from the 2016 tour was added back in. And for the first time in recent tours, a short version of Fire On High was added and on the later shows, a performance of Believe Me Now was added. Most dramatic, Roll Over Beethoven was dropped, which was the first regular show in which the song did not close the show since 1973. On the UK shows, with Dhani Harrison as the opening act, he again joined the band on stage for Handle With Care (as was done on the 2019 tour). Altogether new, however, Dhani stayed on stage the band performed End Of The Line, which was a first for Jeff Lynne's ELO.

For the short UK leg of the tour, Jeff only sang and did not play guitar at all. He had broken his left hand in a taxi just before the tour, which prevented him from playing the guitar, therefore, he only stood and sang, although often motioning as if playing a phantom guitar or keyboard. Sadly, at the end of the first of the Manchester shows, Jeff appeared noticeably in physical distress and called for a chair to finish the show. The band skipped the usual habit of leaving the stage and returning for the encore song, going directly from Don't Bring Me Down to the Mr. Blue Sky encore, with Jeff being assisted off stage as soon as it was over. Sadly, the next day's Manchester show was cancelled at the last moment, leaving the audience disappointed.

There was worry and hope for the final show in London for the BST festival. Despite assurances that the show would go on in the ensuing days, the Saturday before the big finale, there was an announcement that the show was to be cancelled due to Jeff's systemic infection. The exact nature of this infection was never explained. Not only was the Jeff Lynne show cancelled, but the entire day's events, including all bands. Any merchandise to be sold for the show was either not produced or destroyed, except for a special Jeff Lynne BST t-shirt sold only on the BST website.

Fans, of course, were disappointed. Many had come in from around the world and at big expense to see this final show. The day of what was to be the final show, many fans gathered at Hyde Park, celebrating Jeff Lynne's ELO with camaradarie and spontaneous sing-alongs. It was bittersweet.

Richard Tandy's wife, Sheila Tandy, had opened a charity in Richard Tandy's honor at Richard Tandy Production Suite and scholarship at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (RBC) in early 2025. Jeff also featured a charity auction and sweepstakes (!@#details) to help fund student scholarships. Funds from the UK leg of the Over And Out Tour were contributed to help launch the Richard Tandy Production Suite and fund the scholarship at the school. The Richard Tandy Production Suite contains some of Richard's instruments, music equipment and memorabilia donated by his family.

Iain Hornal - Return To The Magic Kingdom Big Horizon - In The Beginning In December 2024, shortly after the end of the North American tour, select members of Jeff Lynne's backing band, under the name Big Horizon, released their album In The Beginning. The band members include Mike Stevens, Jo Webb, Donavan Hepburn, Iain Hornal and Lee Pomeroy. The album cover's photographs of the band appear to be taken in the southwest states of America and were likely done when the band was on tour in the area or shortly after. In addition, on June 15, 2025, just before the start of the short UK leg of the tour, backing vocalist Iain Hornal released his solo album entitled Return To The Magic Kingdom. He posted on his social media accounts: "I've got some gigs coming up in London and Manchester!" If you like Jeff Lynne's ELO, you might like these albums too!

Band and crew members

The band remains almost the same as the Live 2019 tour band, with the exception of keyboardist Shannon Harris replacing the departed (hat wearing) Steve Turner. The crew remains unclear at this time as no other sources of information are available. [explain Shannon Harris background here and new folks on prior tours!@#]

The merchandise, at least for the North American tour, did not include a tour program. As this was a source of the crew on previous tours, the crew is not realiably identified here.

Setlist

The setlist varied a lot early in the tour, before finally settling on a regular setlist. Twilight was performed only on the first show, before being dropped. And in a big surprise to fans, Calling America from the 1986 Balance Of Power album (an album heretofore ignored in the Jeff Lynne's ELO era) was performed in the first two shows before being dropped.

One of ELO's biggest hits (arguably their biggest chart success), Telephone Line was used an encore song for the first six shows of the tour before Mr. Blue Sky, the final encore. Telephone Line was eventually moved to a few songs earlier, before the final rush to the end. The reason for this is likely due to the song's ballad pace. Most big concerts prefer to end on a string of rousing, uptempo songs. Therefore, although a huge hit for ELO, the song could bring down the energy at the end of the show and it fit better much earlier.

Brought into the setlist a little less than halfway through the tour was the never-performed-live song Believe Me Now. It was used as an intro for Steppin' Out, much as it is on the Out Of The Blue. Thanks to this live performance, it was finally able to determine what the synthesizer vocal was saying on the song.

Also included was a short section of Fire On High with a special highlight on the violin solo, as performed by Jesse Murphy. This short bit of Fire On High was used as a sort of intro to Livin' Thing, taking advantage of the prominent violin played by Jesse Murphy as she was at the front of the stage.

Unusual, though, was the exclusion of Roll Over Beethoven as the encore. This was a standard ending for all regular ELO concerts since 1973, so it's exclusion as the encore was a surprise to many long time fans, with Mr. Blue Sky being the encore song instead. The song was excluded probably for two reasons. First, leaving it out of the setlist allowed additional ELO songs to be included in the seemingly "locked in" 90 minute set. Second, Jeff was no longer taking lead guitar on any songs during the show, playing rhythm only. It is assumed that for health reasons, he could no longer play lead guitar very well and Roll Over Beethoven features several lenghty and prominent guitar solos (played alternately by Jeff and Milton MacDonald on previous Jeff Lynne's ELO shows). Leaving out the lead guitar heavy song meant Jeff did not need to play these guitar solos anymore.

The UK shows (that were not cancelled) used the exact same setlist as the later USA shows, with the inclusion of the Traveling Wiburys shows, Handle With Care and End Of The Line featuring Dhani Harrison.

Song Title Arrangement Graphics Used Song Comments
Intro Music A taped compilation of sections from ELO songs (mostly intros) quickly cross-fading into each other. They are: the choral outro to Twilight/21st Century Man; the string opening to Rain is Falling; the string intro to Night in the City; the keyboard intro to Nightrider; the choral intro to Fire On High; the backwards intro to Secret Messages; part of Eldorado Overture; the descending synth intro to Wishing and Starlight; the orchestral intro of One Summer Dream with Jeff's vocals from Don't Walk Away pasted above. One Summer Dream's intro crossfades into the fade-in of One More Time with a heartbeat rhythm underneath. No graphics were used apart from rhythmic lights on the spaceship.
One More Time This is the same as the From Out Of Nowehere arrangement, but the fade-in intro is taped, and has a non-fading ending. [was there a short version on early concerts] The ELO spaceship flying through cosmic space from different perspectives, including a first person perspective inside the ship.
Evil Woman This is the same as the Face The Music album arrangement, but without the orchestral intro and a non-fading ending. Evil Woman graphicsGradually changing animated visuals of sinister-looking women, crossfading into a close up of a woman's eye. During the chorus, there is a space-like animation of a slow-moving inferno. Most visuals have a predominantly red color scheme.
Showdown This is the same as the On The Third Day album arrangement, but with a non-fading ending. The outro lyrics are not sung. Showdown graphicsThe verses show a planet's wasteland surface, with natural disasters like meteor impacts and surface eruptions. Occasionally, a spaceman is shown walking on the planet's surface.
Do Ya This is the same as the A New World Record album arrangement, but with the final verse (Well I think you know...) being sung by Iain Hornal. Do Ya graphicsA collage of musical visualizations that pulse with the beat of the song as well as what looks like the inside of a computer with pulsating old-style transistors.
Sweet Talkin' Woman This is the same as the Out of the Blue arrangement, but with the acapella section being a couple bars earlier (on "slow down" instead of "hold on") and a non-fading ending. Sweet Talkin' Woman graphicsVarious visualizations pulsing to the beat of the song, and some occasional futuristic vortexes with faces in them. Some of the visualizations are reuses of graphics seen during Tightrope on the 2016 tour.
Strange Magic This is the same as the Face the Music arrangement, but without the orchestral intro and a non-fading ending. Strange Magic graphicsAn animated strange, fantasy-like forest/garden rotating and transforming into gradually different versions of itself.
10538 Overture This is the same as the Electric Light Orchestra/No Answer arrangement. No graphics were used apart from rhythmic lights on the spaceship. Jeff and Ian Hornal sing the lead vocal lines together in harmony (with Milton and Lee singing many of the "ah, ah" responses), but Ian is singing so loudly that Jeff is barely heard, leading some to speculate he is miming. Because you can hear they harmony, he is obviously singing.
Handle With Care This is the same as the Volume 1 arrangement.!@# TBD!@# !@# with Dhani (detail who sings what)
End Of The Line This is the same as the Volume 1 arrangement.!@# TBD!@# !@# with Dhani (detail who sings what)
Can't Get It Out Of My Head This is the same as the Eldorado arrangement. Can't Get It Out Of My Head graphicsSlow-moving visuals of water, with fog above, and trees and a moonlit sky in the background. Crossfades into a dark sky with some lit up clouds from the moon behind. The middle instrumental bridge features a more realized landscape of trees and such. All visuals have a high contrast black and pale palette.
Twilight This is the same as the Time arrangement, but features a fade-in intro from Prologue all performed in the key of A major instead of C major like the original recording. Twilight graphicsThe ELO spaceship flying through space toward the audience at near-light speeds, passing a never-ending field of nebulae. The lights on the face of the ship and the ELO logo rotate quickly throughout. This song was only performed at one show, the August 24th show in Palm Desert.
Rockaria! This is the same as the A New World Record arrangement, with Jeff and Iain Hornal alternating each verse (each line on the final verse). Curiously, the Beethoven musical quote is missing on the chorus. [verify the latter bit] Rockaria! graphicsSeveral different rotating discs, with some that pulse to the beat of the song. The Rockaria! 45rpm single rotates on the screen with a kaleidoscope-like animation behind it.
Last Train To London This is the same as the Discovery album arrangement, but performed in a key of D minor instead of E minor like the original recording. The song ends immediately after the fast drum and bass bit. Last Train To London graphicsThe intro shows a large, polyrendered city from above. Various different perspectives of subway train stations fading into slightly different renders and texts. Sometime during the chorus, a futuristic vortex was shown. All animations have a neon pink and neon cyan palette. Whether by accident or by design, when the song was moved to earlier in the setlist, the lyric "it was 9:29" was remarkably close to 9:29PM in the evening.
Calling America This is the same as the Balance of Power arrangement, but performed in the key of C major instead of D major on the original recording. It also features an acapella non-fading ending. Calling America graphicsSeveral different 3D renders of planet Earth with varying degrees of detail, with an occasional satelite orbiting. During the chorus, numerous American city names pan across the screen from right to left. The lights on the set and the spaceship are mostly red, with some white. Likely an homage to the U.S.A. flag, or the predominent red being a callback to the Balance of Power artwork. This song was only performed at the first two shows of the tour, then it was dropped. These were the only live performances of the song by ELO since 1986.
Believe Me Now This is the same as the Out of the Blue arrangement, but without the section that features the line "I love you". It also has a faster segue into Steppin' Out. Believe Me Now graphicsA cosmic star field, with the ELO spaceship flying through. Another smaller ship departs from the ELO ship. This song was added to the setlist starting from the September 16th show and onward.
Steppin' Out This is the same as the Out of the Blue arrangement, but without the orchestral outro. Steppin' Out graphicsSimilar to Believe Me Now, but more visuals of the ships flying through the skies of nebulae, sometimes flying past planets.
Fire On High This is a shorter arrangement, skipping the intro and starting immediately at the synth arpeggios. The guitar melody is skipped, going straight into the fast rhythm guitar section. After this section, the song finishes with the final bars from the Face the Music album arrangement. Fire On High graphicsDuring the synth section, the screen displayed what appears to be a supernova. The remainder of the song showed the ELO spaceship separating into segments and showing different mechanical components of the ship. [Is this played, almost like!@# an intro to Livin' Thing]?
Livin' Thing This is the same as the A New World Record arrangment, but with a non-fading ending. Livin' Thing graphicsDuring the violin solos, a timelapse of a flower blooming is shown. During all other sections of the song, there are various animations of different spots of nature full of flora, sometimes with a butterfly flying over it all.
All Over The World This is the same as the Xanadu arrangement, but performed two semitones lower in the key of C major, instead of D major on the original recording. All Over The World graphicszSeveral poly renders of the Earth with the ELO spaceship orbiting around it. During the chorus, a single wireframe render of the Earth orbiting with a disc of different cities across the world rotating around it that pulses to the beat. During the city chant, the Earth alone pulses to the beat.
Turn To Stone This is the same as the Out of the Blue arrangement, but with a non-fading intro and ending. Turn To Stone graphicsVarious perspectives of asteroids flying along in space in a belt. The chorus shows them flying towards and crashing into a fiery planetoid which eventually appears to have large static beams emerging from it. The fast section shows a cosmic vortex. Eventually the ELO spaceship is shown flying though space towards the planetoid.
Shine A Little Love This is the same as the Discovery arrangement, but also includes an acapella section of the chorus near the end. It also features a non-fading ending. Shine A Little Love graphicsA disco ball spins and pulses to the beat, sometimes changing colors and occasionally reflecting beams of light, an homage to its album Discovery. Occasionally the perspective changes. [!@# add note about it being longer than previous concerts]
Don't Bring Me Down This song is the same as the Discovery arrangement, but features some additional bars of a synthesizer melody, and an extended drum solo ending. Don't Bring Me Down graphicsThe intro shows the viewer flying through cosmic field of metallic objects before changing to different animations of futuristic city and passageways from varying angles. The color palette is a neon pink and neon blue predominantly.
Telephone Line This is the same as the A New World Record arrangment, but with a non-fading ending. Telephone Line graphicsIt shows a phone line in the foreground with a rapidly-moving starfield moving quickly in the sky. The verses feature beams of green passing along, matching the laser lights on the stage. The choruses have a radar scan of the Earth animated, the same green palette as the verses. During setlists #1 to #3, this song was included at the end as part of the encore.
Mr. Blue Sky This song is the same as the full Out of the Blue arrangement, but without the radio tuning at the beginning. Also, the final chord is extended to feature a drum solo. Mr. Blue Sky graphicsThe ELO spaceship flies through a blue sky with lush white clouds. Eventually the angle changes and in an empty blue sky are clouds in the shape of a smiling face. During the Concerto coda, the clouds appear more cosmic, with the smiling face reemerging for during "Please turn me over." This song was part of the encore, and at most shows, the only encore song.

TBD - Are there any promo videos?

Prizeo promotion for Chicago show To benefit the Simms/Mann at Massachusetts General Hospital, charity organization Prizeo joined with Sony and Jeff Lynne for a chance to win VIP seats for two for the September 28, 2024 show in Chicago. In addition, the winners also were giving free round trip airfare to Chicago and their hotel stay. The promotion started on July 13 and ends on a date to be determined and the winner announced on a date to be determined.

There was a similar event for the Live 2019 tour (hosted by Omaze), but that one included a front row seet, a meeting with Jeff Lynne, attend the sound check, a backstage our nad a signed Les Gibson guitar. This promotion with Prizeo does not feature these perks and is simply a standard VIP package for two (not promoted as front row), airfare and hotel. Please can you sell a cd of the over and out tour. It would be nice to have the memories of the concert and songs with the screen visuals. I would cherish this. Thanks

Why no “Twilight”? One of the real great tracks.

Absolutely love concert but really missed Rosie hope she’s well

Since Phoenix is your last US tour, what are the chances of you playing Roll Over Beethoven? Perhaps the intro a few lyrics? Please?

Can someone provide the "opening music's" montage pieces/excerpts?

Best concert I've been to and appreciate Jeff Lynne's professionalism.

I got to see the three Texas shows (Austin 10/15, Houston 10/16, Dallas, 10/18). The Austin one was with my mom and brother, Houston with my mom and two aunts, then finally Dallas with my Dad, sister, and step mom. Between shows, I got to meet ELO fans from across the world who travelled to see Jeff and his band one final time. The audiences were large! Austin and Houston were very close to being, if not were, sold out, and I believe Dallas actually was!

The crowds were never bored, and even gave Rooney (who performed excellent) a very welcome reception at all three shows, but no doubt they were certainly there for ELO. During certain song moments, you could hear the crowd singing equal to ELO - a best case being "ha ha" on Evil Woman, "hello!" on Telephone Line, "higher and higher, baby" on Livin' Thing, and "No no no no no" on Don't Bring Me Down. During Can't Get It Out Of My Head, many raised their phone flashlights in the air as you would with lighters, the same to a lesser extent on Steppin' Out. The crowd roared after the fast bridge on Turn To Stone and the opening to Mr. Blue Sky.

In Austin, during the band introduction for Melanie Lewis-McDonald, Mike Stevens introduced her as the birthday girl and the crowd cheered extra for her. In Houston a funny moment, Jeff missed the queue for the opening line of Livin' Thing. Just after he hastily sang it, he said into the mic "sorry!". The crowd did not mind it at all and were so happy to see him. By Dallas, Jeff sounded his best in my opinion.

This was no doubt the best shows ever put on, and certainly some of the best days of my life.

Can you upgrade seat locations in Dallas?

My bride & I attended the Detroit concert, great performance, sound & venue. First heard ELO in ‘73 on Detroit FM station WABX, was hooked from that moment. Their music is timeless. g

I saw them in Denver at Ball Area...one of the best performances ever!

Attended St. Paul concert and it was amazing. Our adult children came with us and they were singing along as well. Terrific music all through the years! Take care Jeff and thanks for the music!

Please do set list 1 in St. Paul. Twilight is my favorite!

No Xanadu?

it was the most amazing concert i've ever seen. Even though Jeff was rusty he still made me smile and dance.

Fantastic concert in Vancouver BC

Amazing concert in Seattle. So many great songs & memories!! k
